Tulo – A True Gold Glover
November 19th, 2009 | by wutae3 |We have all seen some unbelievable plays made at short by Troy Tulowitzki. For his size, a man should not be able to make that many plays in the hole. Tulo has just as much range as any other shortstop in the game. Add in his laser-rocket arm and you have a complete shortstop.
Tulowitzki has been in the majors for three seasons now and still has not won a Gold Glove. Jimmy Rollins has won the award the past three seasons. While J-Roll is definitely deserving, it would be nice if the voters would be consistent every season.
Take this season. Rollins had the best fielding percentage and the least amount of errors for any shortstop in the NL. Tulowitzki had the second best fielding percentage and finished with the third least amount of errors for any shortstop in the NL. If we base it off those stats, Rollins definitely deserved the Gold Glove. And from all indications, those were the parameters the voters used to give him the award. That seems reasonable.
Now, flashback to 2007 when Rollins won the award. Tulo was a rookie. He finished with the best fielding percentage and tied for second with the least amount of errors. However, Omar Vizquel finished first but started 19 less games than Tulo. Rollins finished third in fielding percentage and tied for second (with Tulo) for the least amount of errors. It seems to me, Tulo deserved the Gold Glove that season if we are basing it off the same parameters that were used this season.
However, voters never do that. They are never consistent. In 2007, Rollins also won the MVP. He had an amazing year at the plate and the voters included those stats in their consideration for the Gold Glove. Unfair. Tulowitzki deserved the Gold Glove over Rollins that season. The Gold Glove is just for defense, not offense.
Another stat that the voters don’t take into consideration is total chances. They should because if a player handles the ball more than another player, they have the opportunity for more mistakes. So, in theory, they may have a few more errors but that shouldn’t be counted against them since they handled the ball more.
Back in 2007, Tulo had 834 total chances. Rollins had 717. That’s 117 more chances and Tulo had the same amount of errors as Rollins. In theory, Rollins had an error every 65 attempts (717 total chances/11 errors). So, if Rollins had as many chances as Tulo, he would have had at least one more error, probably two.
Rollins deserved the Gold Glove this season and in 2008. However, in 2007, he did not. His offensive numbers carried him to the award. What’s even worse is both teams were good that season. The voters had their chance to see both players play, especially at the end of the season. The Phillies made the playoffs and the Rockies went on that an unbelievable run to make the playoffs.
I know there is nothing that can be done. However, I hope one day Tulo will get his Gold Glove. He deserves it. With the way he plays short, he has the opportunity to win many Gold Gloves in the future.
