Little Action on the Final Day
December 11th, 2009 | by wutae3 |While the temperatures in Denver began to rise, the action in Indianapolis grew colder. For a second straight day, no major moves were made by the Rockies. Colorado came to the Winter Meetings with a small shopping list; they will be leaving with one player and few other others in limbo.
Colorado and Yorvit Torrealba continue to negotiate a contract. The Rockies are sticking to their two-year $5 million offer. Torrealba is looking for a deal worth about $6 million. It Torrealba can get that type of deal, he’ll take it. However, there aren’t many suitors at this point. The Rockies are prepared to move on if Torrealba declines their offer. The Rockies are looking at Miguel Olivo and Josh Bard as other options.
In other catching news, the Rockies are close to a three-year deal with Chris Iannetta for $8.3 million. The deal covers Iannetta through his arbitration years. The contract also has a $5 million club option that covers Iannetta’s first year of free agency. This deal shows how much confidence the Rockies have in their young catcher. Iannetta will be relied on heavily next year to bet a right-handed threat in the Rockies line-up.

More News and Notes:
- Jim Tracy wants Jason Giambi back. However, he knows Giambi is looking for a DH role in the American League. If he can’t find a job, the Rockies would love to have him back. He was an outstanding teammate late last season and was a threat coming off the bench in the late innings.
- The Rockies are looking for a utility player who can fill multiple roles on the team. They are currently looking at Melvin Mora, Jamey Carroll, Orlando Hudson, Fernando Tatis, Chad Tracy and Robb Quinlan as possibilities.
- Colorado wants Jose Contreras back but in the bullpen. He pitched well in that role late in the season last year. The Rockies are also willing to bring back Joe Beimel at the right price.
- Once the Rockies return from Indianapolis, they will begin work on contract extensions with Clint Barmes and Huston Street.
- Colorado did not lose or take anyone in the Rule V draft today.
